The Ambassador Hotel Wichita

The Ambassador Hotel Wichita is located in the city’s Old Town–a section of the central business district that the local government has tried to rejuvenate with new businesses, restaurants, and retail. The hotel is located in a historic building interesting in itself, but the gem is the size of the corner king room that we were upgraded to.

The large, ample windows let in plenty of natural light serving to further enlarge its capaciousness, while French inspired draperies, furniture, and decor add to the charm.

The Siena Tuscan Steakhouse, contrary to its name, is an all-day restaurant, and the breakfast was sumptuous. The only crease in the otherwise crisp linen is that the gym is a tad small for a hotel that bills itself as a luxury property and the range of equipment can certainly be expanded. All said, the Ambassador Hotel Wichita is certainly one of the city’s best.

Rediscovering the Hyatt Regency Wichita

In June I had the opportunity to once again stay at the Hyatt Regency Wichita, which I had previously reviewed three times.  This most recent stay, with a complimentary upgrade to a corner room by a cheerful, prompt, and helpful front desk associate by the name of Beverley provided some new experiences.

The lobby, designed to resemble an open, contemporary home, is welcoming and puts guests at ease.  Guests preferring more healthy, light fare or snacks can avail themselves of Perks Coffee and More, which in addition to salads, sandwiches, and pastry, also serves up a steaming cup of Starbucks Coffee.

The corner guestroom with its muted, soft colors and lighting makes for a relaxing stay. The Hyatt bed, linens, and array of pillow options allow for a restful night–or a delightful siesta.  For bathroom amenities, Hyatt has switched from Portico Spa to KenetMD.  The shampoo and conditioner leave hair clean and supple, while the body lotion is easy to apply and absorbent.

The best aspect of the corner room, with its abundant windows, however is the panoramic view of the Arkansas River, the Lawrence Dumont Stadium, the INTRUST Bank Arena, and surrounding attractions.

Vice Presidential Suite at Hyatt Regency Wichita

I’ve stayed at the Hyatt Regency Wichita numerous times over the years, and my most recent stay in June was rewarded with an upgrade to the Meadowlark Suite, also known as the river-side property’s Vice Presidential Suite.  I probably have a full-occupancy to thank for the upgrade.

Image

Taking up the space of approximately three regular rooms, the Vice Presidential Suite is immaculately appointed with two living areas, a small pantry, large work desks, a separate bedroom, enclosed shower, and a jacuzzi tub.

The suite is tastefully decorated with muted earth tones, and the bed is consistently Hyatt standard with wonderfully smooth linens and a variety of comfortable pillows.  The suite comes with its own line of eucalyptus-scented toiletries in a generously-sized bathroom.

If you’re offered a breakfast package, go for it.  The hotel’s Harvest Kitchen executes a great breakfast with American and Continental sections to suite different palates.

Hyatt Regency Wichita Revisited

Exactly six months ago to the day, I reviewed the Hyatt Regency Wichita.  At that time, the lobby was undergoing a major makeover.  That revamp has since been completed, as evidenced in my return one day after Christmas.  In place of an ornate reception reminiscent of a bygone era two decades ago is an airy, contemporary lobby featuring clean lines, fuss-free furniture, and plenty of corners for that tête à tête.

Stay Fit@Hyatt facilities at the Hyatt Regency Wichita include a heated indoor pool and a serviceable fitness room, which while not comprehensive, is sufficient for the purpose of trimming the pounds gained over the Christmas holidays (or business lunches).

The rooms, featuring a classic American decor, are certainly comfortable and inviting.  That being said, bed linens with higher threadcounts in line with those found in international Hyatt properties wsuch as the Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok would certainly be welcome.  On the other hand, the Portico Spa toiletries featuring the White Ginger range is a step above the generic amenities used in Grand Hyatt porperties in Asia such as Bangkok and Jakarta, and cannot be faulted.

Despite its strengths, room service could be improved.  The newspaper was not delivered to the room in the morning as promised, and when given the feedback at checkout, there was no apology.

The Hyatt Regency Wichita, Kansas

The Hyatt Regency Wichita was undergoing some major refurbishments when I checked in last week.  In the pipeline are a new lobby, reception, and check-in desks.  The general manager predicted “some dust with a chance of noise.”  Meanwhile, what was once the conference reception now does double duty as guest check-in.  Other signs of major work are elevators that are stripped bare to their metal wall panels, with holes peering into the lift shafts for ventilation.

Still, my room, offering views of the Arkansas River and the Lawrence Dumont Stadium, was clean and comfortable, and the Hyatt bed never fails to offer a welcome respite after a 20-plus hour trans-Pacific flight.

The decor is classically American, with clean lines accented by relaxing cream colors.  I especially love the Portico Spa bath amenities at the Hyatt Regency Wichita, which feature the White Ginger collection that offers a warm scent with just a slight undertone of spice.

Despite the major renovations, which are expected to be completed by end-June, the gym (dubbed StayFit@Hyatt in the North American properties without on-site spas), was functioning, and while the range of equipments was not extensive, they was certainly serviceable.  Credit must go to Hyatt for its creditable effort in ensuring that guests can enjoy a robust workout whichever property they choose to stay.
